Chisato Nishikigi (錦木 千束)

Chisato Nishikigi is one of the main characters in Lycoris Recoil. She is a top Lycoris agent known for her incredible combat skills and her philosophy of avoiding lethal force in the line of duty. Chisato works at LycoReco, a cafe that serves as a cover for her operations as a Lycoris agent. Despite her cheerful and carefree personality, she hides a complex and highly trained skill set that makes her one of the most formidable agents in the Lycoris program.

Appearance

Chisato has a distinctive look, with blonde hair styled in a bob cut and bright red eyes that make her stand out. Her cheerful and friendly demeanor is often reflected in her choice of clothing, as she’s frequently seen in bright, casual outfits, but while on duty as a Lycoris, she dons the black and navy uniform typical of Lycoris agents. In her role as a waitress at LycoReco, she can often be seen in a more casual, welcoming attire, fitting the atmosphere of the cafe.

Personality

Chisato is cheerful, free-spirited, and loves to have fun. Unlike other Lycoris agents who tend to follow orders strictly, she operates with her own personal code of avoiding lethal force, always seeking non-lethal solutions even in dangerous situations. This moral stance makes her unique among the Lycoris, and although it causes friction with more by-the-book agents like Takina Inoue, Chisato’s charm and optimism help her win people over. Despite her lighthearted nature, she takes her responsibilities as a protector very seriously.

Backstory and Major Plot Points

Chisato’s backstory is a pivotal aspect of Lycoris Recoil. She is revealed to have a special artificial heart, gifted to her by Shinji Yoshimatsu, a wealthy benefactor who has deep ties to DA. This artificial heart enhances her physical abilities, allowing her to perform feats like dodging bullets and maintaining exceptional stamina, which explains her almost superhuman abilities in combat.

Shinji Yoshimatsu, who sees Chisato as his masterpiece, expects her to become an assassin and use her skills for more lethal purposes. However, Chisato’s refusal to kill deeply disappoints him, leading to a growing tension between them throughout the series. Eventually, Shinji, who considers her rejection of his ideals a failure, makes drastic moves to force Chisato to follow his path, including threatening her heart's functioning.

In a climactic moment later in the series, Shinji arranges for her artificial heart to be deactivated, which puts Chisato’s life in danger. This leads to an emotional confrontation between Chisato and Takina Inoue, her friend and fellow agent, as they work together to save her life.
